ANIMALS STARTING WITH LETTER j

329 species

We collected more than 270 animals beginning with the letter J.

You probably expect to find a Jackal in this list, but it is not here because we use species names rather than a group or common names. The term “jackal” refers to medium-sized canids. Historically the word "jackal" has been used for many canines of the subtribe canina, but today it most commonly refers to three species: the closely related Black-backed jackal, and Side-striped jackal, and the Golden jackal. The English name of all three species don’t start with the letter “J” and thus is absent in this list.

When searching for a Junglefowl one also should know that the term “junglefowl” refers to four living species of bird from the genus Gallus. These include the Red junglefowl, the Grey junglefowl, the Sri Lankan junglefowl, and the Green junglefowl. None of these species’ English names start with the letter “J” as well and thus can’t be found here.

It can be tricky sometimes so we made a list of popular animal names starting with the letter “J”. Here it is: Jabiru, Jacamar, Jacana, Jackal, Japanese Squirrel, Jaguar, Japanese Macaque, Jay, Junco, Jackson’s Chameleon, Jerboa, Javan leopard, Jaguarundi, Junglefowl, Jerboa, Jackrabbit, Jackdaw, Javan Rhinoceros.
