ANIMALS STARTING WITH LETTER d

1089 species

We collected the list of animals beginning with D. There are more than 900 species on our list.

You probably expect to find a Deer in this list, but it is not here because we use species names rather than a group or common names. The term “deer” refers to a hoofed ruminant mammal of the family Cervidae. There are 43 deer species exist and there is only one among them whose name starts with the letter D. It is Dwarf Brocket, a small species of deer native to the Andean highlands in South America. The Elk, the Chital, the Reindeer or Caribou, and the Moose are also deers but they can’t be found in this list.

In the same way, it can be quite confusing with the Dolphin. The term “dolphin” refers to aquatic mammals belonging to the families Delphinidae (the oceanic dolphins), Platanistidae (the Indian river dolphins), Iniidae (the New World river dolphins), Pontoporiidae (the brackish dolphins), and the extinct Lipotidae (baiji or Chinese river dolphin). There are 40 extant species named dolphins. For example, this list includes the Dusky dolphin but doesn’t include the False killer whale or the Tucuxi who are also dolphins and don’t even have the term ”dolphin” in their English name.

It is confusing sometimes so we made a list of popular animal names starting with the letter “D”. Here it is: Dolphin, Donkey, Duck, Dragonfly, Dormouse, Dove, Drongo, Drill, Dhole, Duiker, Dog, Dugong, Deer, Dunnart, Dartfish, Drongo, Dik-dik, Dingo.
