We collected more than 2900 animals beginning with the letter S.
You probably expect to find a Swan in this list, but it is not here because we use species names rather than a group or common names. The term “swan” refers to birds within the genus Cygnus. There are six living species: the Mute swan, the Black swan, the Black-necked swan, the Trumpeter swan, and the Tundra swan. None of these species’ common English names starts with the letter “S” and that’s why it is not included in this list.
Another example is a Stork. The term “stork” refers to large wading birds that belong to the family called Ciconiidae. There are 19 living species of storks and only two of them are included in this list. These are the Storm’s stork and the Saddle-billed stork because the common English names of these birds start with the letter “S”.
It may be confusing sometimes so we made a list of popular animal names starting with the letter “R”. Here it is: Serval, Sloth, Snow Bunting, Salamander, Snowshoe, Sparrow, Spider Monkey, Sheep, Slug, Skunk, Striped Hyena, Snake, Swainson’s Hawk, Skink, Slug, Squirrel, Spixs Macaw, Solenodon, Seal, Swan, Stork.
