Origin
The Brazilian Shorthair Cat originated when the engineer Paulo Samuel Ruschi, a cat breeder and founder of the first Cat Federation in Brazil and the first Cat Club in Rio de Janeiro, had the idea to develop a purebred cat from certain cats found in the streets of Brazil. He focused on cats from the Iberian Peninsula, which were brought to Brazil by the Portuguese in their ships around 1500 A.D. Commissions were established by Dr. Paulo Ruschi from North to South of Brazil to study this animal in all of the country's parks and streets. After many years of an experimental breeding program conducted by traditional breeders, the Brazilian Shorthair was eventually recognized as a Pure Breed cat by the World Cat Federation headquartered in Germany in 1998. Today, the Brazilian Shorthair cat is eligible to participate in competitions worldwide.
Temperament
Brazilian Shorthairs are known for their affectionate nature, intelligence, and high level of activity. Unlike some other cat breeds, they are not ones to laze around all day. Instead, they are constantly curious and on the go, always seeking out new adventures. This breed is also incredibly sociable, getting along well with individuals of all ages. They thrive on being in the spotlight and revel in the attention they receive from their human companions.
In essence, Brazilian Shorthairs are a perfect blend of love and adventure. With their adaptable nature, they can seamlessly integrate into various living environments, whether indoors or outdoors. Their playful and outgoing demeanor makes them a delightful addition to any household.

Common health issues
Brazilian Shorthair cats thrive on a diet rich in protein, making it essential to avoid wheat, corn, and soy. Opt for a high-quality diet containing chicken, beef, turkey, seafood, or other appropriate animal proteins. Both dry and wet food are suitable for their diet, and you can augment their meals with real cooked fish, chicken, or other meats. Ensuring they have constant access to fresh, clean water is crucial to keep them adequately hydrated.
The Brazilian Shorthair cat is known for its short hair, which results in minimal shedding. It is important to groom them weekly to maintain the shine and smoothness of their coats. Additionally, regular ear inspections and monthly nail trimming are necessary to prevent chipping and cracking. Furthermore, brushing their teeth on a regular basis is essential to prevent periodontal disease.
Grooming intencity:
Easy to groom
The Brazilian Shorthair boasts robust health thanks to their resilient street-dwelling forebears. Presently, there are no reported health conditions that could impede your cat's vitality; however, no cat is entirely immune to ailments. It is common for many cats to overindulge if given the opportunity, leading to obesity or potential dental problems. Therefore, it is essential to schedule routine checkups for your cat to promptly identify and address any unforeseen health issues.
