Appearance

As already mentioned above, representatives of this breed are divided into several subgroups by size. But German Spitz are all quite compact, with a strong body and a cute fluffy look. The head is not large, apple-shaped. The muzzle is slightly elongated, reminiscent of a fox. Very nice big shiny eyes of a dark colour, with an intelligent lively look. Triangular small ears are sharply raised. The fluffy tail should be curled to lie on its back. The most interesting thing about German Spitz is their fluffy, long, voluminous hair, which looks very luxurious. The colour can be of all types: black, cream, dark brown, orange-brown and similar shades.

Origin

The roots of German Spitz go back to the ancient times of Germany, and the remains of their ancestors that have been found date back to the 8th-10th centuries BC. By the way, they were found in Sweden. Representatives of this breed were very widely distributed among the royal nobility, as well as the aristocracy. Grosspitz are still used as herding dogs in their homeland, according to their original purpose. The ancestors of these dogs are very difficult to determine because of their ancient origin. A club of lovers of this breed was created in 1899 in Germany, and in 1906 the first standard was adopted for Spitz of all sizes and colours.

Temperament

All types of spitz have a very active and intelligent character, by the way, German Spitz are also incredibly friendly, especially in the circle of their family. They are best suited for active people or families who have the opportunity to take their pets with them everywhere. Otherwise, German Spitz will be very sad and whine for their owner. By the way, they get along perfectly with children, because you can also play with them. Also, German Spitz communicate very well with other pets, even cats. As you can understand, they are not at all suitable for the role of a guard, because German Spitz are friendly even to strangers. Be prepared that it will be difficult to relax with these small dogs because German Spitz need an active lifestyle.

Larger dogs can already be taught some more complex tricks, but in no case should German Spitz be overworked. Be sure to praise pets for any achievements and be gradual, starting from basic commands to more complex ones. By the way, from puppy age, the German Spitz must be accustomed to your unshakable rules.

The diet of German Spitz should be designed uniquely for their characteristics, the main part should be meat, sea fish without bones, dairy products, and various cereals, such as rice, and buckwheat. Avoid eating from the human table, as this can lead to digestive diseases. A vitamin-mineral complex must be present in a natural diet. And if you want to choose dry food, it must correspond to the German Spitz's size and physical activity. Not below the premium class. Make sure your pet has access to water.
From their thick, long fur, you can understand that German Spitz need a lot of care. They should be combed with a brush with long teeth in order to thoroughly read the wool, starting from the skin. This should be done every two days or even daily, as well as before bathing. After bathing, the wool must be well combed and dried. Also, regularly take your pet for a grooming haircut. Also, don't forget to trim their claws. Take care of the cleanliness of German Spitz ears and eyes, which should be wiped daily with a special lotion.

Requires lots of grooming
In general, dogs of the German Spitz breed are very hardy with strong immunity, but sometimes some tendencies may still manifest themselves:
  • Obesity.
  • Hip dysplasia. As you can see, this list is very small, but that doesn't mean they don't happen at all. It is better to monitor the pet's behavior at home and not miss a single visit to the veterinarian.
