Origin

In the early 1900s, breeders thought to create a large, strong, and athletic dog that would be able to perform large amounts of work on the farm and the result of their efforts was the Huntaway. To get the dogs we know, breeders crossed several breeds some of which were Border Collies, Rottweilers, and Labradors. As the popularity of these dogs began to grow, special daytime events were even developed to showcase their herding power. Representatives of the Huntaway breed were recognized for the first time by the New Zealand Kennel Club in 2013, but despite this, the American Kennel Club still does not recognize Huntaways as a separate breed.

Temperament

Huntaways generally have a very obedient and kind nature, but because of their work on the farm, they have retained an independent character. These dogs are ready to be gentle and kind to all members of the family but usually choose only one master. Be prepared for the fact that they have a lot of energy in reserve, which must be regularly released with the help of active games and physical exertion. If you are looking for a dog to guard your house, you know that the Huntaway will not suit you 100%, after all, they are kind to strangers and generally to everyone, including children and other pets (even cats). Also, you should not leave them alone at home for a long time, because Huntaways can get bored and destroy your things.

Training

Dogs of this breed are very intelligent and clever but are not recommended for keeping by inexperienced owners, because Huntaways have a touch of independence in their character, so these dogs need socialization training from an early age. Also, due to their great activity, Huntaways can participate in many types of sports. In no case do not get representatives of this breed if you do not have time to give them new physical activities every day and make the training varied.
