Appearance

The LaPerm is a medium-sized cat, elegant and well-muscled, with a broad nose, flared ears, and medium-large almond-shaped eyes. The most significant feature of this breed is their coat, which consists of soft waves, curls, and ringlets, giving them a shaggy perm appearance. The coat can vary depending on the season and the cat's maturity, but it is typically wavy or curly, with the longest and most defined curls found in the ruff and on the neck. Additionally, LaPerms have longer curly fur inside the ears, tufts at the ear tips, and "ear muffs" of longer, silky hair on the backs of the ears. Longhaired LaPerms have a curly plumed tail, while shorthaired LaPerms have tails that resemble bottle brushes. Both varieties have long curled whiskers. LaPerm cats can come in a variety of colors, with tabbies, reds, and tortoiseshells being common due to their origins. Unusual colors such as lilac, chocolate, and colorpoints, which were present in the early days of the breed, remain popular. Breeders are also creating newer varieties such as ticked tabbies, shades, and darker points to expand the color palette of LaPerms.

Origin

The LaPerm breed is genetically unique and not related to any other rex cat varieties, as it possesses a dominant gene that causes their curly coats. This breed was established in 1982 in the United States, specifically in Oregon, by a woman named Linda Koehl. The curly hair of the LaPerm cats is a result of a natural mutation in the genes of a farm cat named Curly. Curly, who was just one of the farm cats, received special care after being injured when she got stuck in the engine of a pickup truck. While indoors, Curly gave birth to her first litter, and all five kittens (all males) inherited the curly gene, marking the beginning of the LaPerm breeding. To gather outside opinions, Linda showcased her cats at various cat shows. Judges, other breeders, and visitors were impressed by the uniqueness of the cats. With the support of key individuals in breed associations, the LaPerm was granted separate breed status, leading to the establishment of a breeding program. The first preliminary standard for the breed was adopted by TICA in 1995, and in 1997, it was officially registered by FIFe.

LaPerm cats are known for their low grooming needs. They have minimal shedding and their coats are resistant to tangling and matting. To keep your LaPerm's coat looking fluffy, a weekly brushing is sufficient, and bathing should only be done when necessary. In addition, it is important to regularly brush your cat's teeth to prevent dental issues, trim its nails as needed, and provide a scratching post for claw maintenance.
