Appearance

The Pixie-bob is a distinctive breed known for its powerful and muscular build, long legs, and short tail. Its unique head shape is often compared to a large inverted pear, with a broad and strong muzzle. The eyes are described as having a softened triangle-rectangle shape, surrounded by a light line around the eye and a black line at the corners. The eye colors can vary from yellow to hazel to green. The medium-sized ears of the Pixie-bob are slightly tilted towards the outer sides of the head, with rounded shapes and tufts on the tips. The fur of the Pixie-bob can be either short or mid-length, with a soft and woolly texture in the case of a short coat. The fur typically features a bobcat-like pattern with reddish, apricot, and peach tones mixed in, giving this breed a unique and striking appearance.

Origin

The origin of the Pixie-bob breed is surrounded by legend and speculation. According to one story, male bobcats supposedly mated with female domestic cats on isolated farms, resulting in kittens with a unique blend of characteristics. However, the documented history of the Pixie-bob begins with breeder Carol Ann Brewer in Washington State. In 1985, Brewer acquired a male cat with distinctive features, including a spotted coat, short tail, and polydactyl paws. Following this, she rescued another male cat named Keba in 1986, which was reputed to have been sired by a bobcat and had similar physical traits. Keba mated with a neighboring female cat, producing a litter in April of the same year. Brewer kept one of the female kittens, named 'Pixie', and began a breeding program with her as the foundation cat. Over the following years, Brewer incorporated cats that she believed were the offspring of bobcats and domestic cats, coining the term 'Legend Cat' for them and trademarking it in the U.S. Collaborating with other breeders who were also working with wild-looking barn cats, they established a diverse genetic pool for the Pixie-bob breed. With Brewer's leadership, they successfully registered the Pixie-bob with The International Cat Association (TICA) and later with the American Cat Fancier's Association (ACFA). The Pixie-bob achieved various milestones with TICA, being accepted into the 'Exhibition' category in 1993, advancing to 'New Breed and Color' status in 1996, and finally earning Championship status in 1998.

Temperament

Despite their wild and rather formidable appearance, cats of this breed are affectionate, obedient, and sociable. They are active, agile, and excel at running and jumping. They are very trusting and highly sociable towards both their owners and strangers. Almost all Pixie-bobs like to be in the same room as their owners and will follow them around the house. These cats enjoy playing with other animals and get along well with children. They communicate with 'chirps', chatters, and growls; most meow scarcely if at all. Pixie-bob cats love to play fetch, they enjoy walking on leashes once they learn how, and unlike most cats, they have a tendency to appreciate the opportunity to ride in the car alongside their family members.

Pixie-bob cats do not require any special diet. They should be fed a balanced, high-protein diet that can consist of both dry and wet food. It is important to provide them with free access to fresh water to ensure they receive adequate nourishment.
Pixie-bob cats have very thick coats and shed seasonally. Although they are great self-groomers, you should also help maintain their beautiful coat. Brushing your Pixie-bob weekly, and twice a week during shedding periods, will help remove dead hair and prevent the formation of hairballs. Additionally, it is important to clean your cat's ears, brush its teeth regularly, and trim its nails when needed. Providing your cat with a scratching post will help it sharpen its claws and prevent damage to your furniture.
