ANIMALS STARTING WITH LETTER o

870 species

We collected more than 700 animals beginning with the letter O.

You probably expect to find an Orangutan in this list, but it is not here because we use species names rather than a group or common names. The term “orangutan” refers to great apes from the genus Pongo. There are only three species exist: the Bornean orangutan, the Sumatran orangutan and the Tapanuli orangutan. None of them is included in this list because the English names of these orangutans don’t start with the letter “O”.

Another example is Otter. The term “otter” refers to mammals in the subfamily Lutrinae. There are 13 extant otter species exist. This list includes only the Oriental small-clawed otter whose English name starts with the letter “O”.

It can be tricky sometimes so we made a list of popular animal names starting with the letter “O”. Here it is: Osprey, Olive Baboon, Otter, Orangutan, Orinoco Crocodile, Owl, Ostrich, Olympic Marmot, Oyster, Okapi, Octopus, Oxpecker.
