The Tennessee Rex breed has a relatively recent history, dating back to 2004 when Franklin Wittenburg, a resident of Tennessee, started caring for a semi-feral cat that later gave birth to kittens. Among the litter, two kittens stood out due to their remarkably soft and curly fur. Intrigued by this unique trait, Wittenburg sought advice from various breeders and eventually reached out to the International Cat Association (TICA) for further guidance. After consulting with a feline geneticist, it was confirmed that the kittens possessed rare genes responsible for their distinctive curly coats. Recognizing the significance of this discovery, TICA granted the Tennessee Rex breed provisional status in 2009, allowing them to partake in TICA-sponsored shows, albeit without the ability to attain titles.
