Aegean cats are medium-sized, muscular, semi-longhaired cats. The coat is typically bicolour or tricolour, with white being the predominant color, usually covering between 1/4 to 9/10 of the body. The remaining portion of the coat can display various other colors and patterns. Their paws are of medium size and have a rounded shape. Their tails are long and may have a slightly curved or 'hooked' appearance. The ears have a broad base and rounded tips, and they are adorned with hair. The eyes of Aegean cats are almond-shaped and can be of any shade of green, blue, or yellow.

Origin
The Aegean cat originates from the Cycladic Islands in the Aegean Sea, where they are a natural landrace. They are among the oldest domesticated cat breeds, believed to have been introduced to the islands during the Bronze Age. In Greece and Turkey, Aegean cats are common as feral cats, often seen around fishing ports where they seek food offerings. Aegean cats are regarded as a national treasure in Greece. In the Cyclades, feral Aegean cats are known to prey on Aegean wall lizards.
The development of the Aegean cat as a formal breed began in the early 1990s by breeders in the emerging Greek cat fancy community. However, this breed has not yet been officially recognized by any major fancier or breeder organization. The Aegean cat is considered the only native Greek variety of cat.
Temperament
Although the Aegean cat breed has only recently started being bred systematically, it has been domesticated for many centuries and has adapted well to living with humans. It is a social pet that can tolerate living in an apartment quite well. Aegean cats are intelligent, active, lively, and communicative, often seeking to engage with their human companions and not hesitating to seek attention.

Common health issues
Aegean cats don't have specific dietary requirements. It's crucial for pet owners to remember that cats are obligate carnivores, meaning they need meat in their diet and minimal carbohydrates. The amount of food your cat needs daily depends on its age and activity levels, so consult your vet if you're unsure about the proper feeding amount. Typically, adult cats can have two meals a day, while kittens may need three or four smaller meals. As with all cats, it is important to give your cat fresh, clean water daily.
Because the breed was allowed to develop through natural selection rather than selective breeding, Aegean cats are free from most feline genetic diseases.
