Appearance

The Peterbald is a strong and elegant cat with long and thin legs and oval paws. The head is narrow and long with a wedge-shaped muzzle and large, set-apart ears. The eyes are almond-shaped and can be green or blue in color. Peterbald cats can be born bald, flocked, velour, brush, or with a straight coat. Those born with hair, excepting the straight-coats, can lose their hair over time. The skin of the Peterbald is thin, loose, and folded. It can come in all colors and markings, with rare colors like pale lilac and chocolate being especially valued.

Origin

This young breed was developed in 1994 by felinologist Olga S. Mironova in Saint Petersburg. It is the result of an experimental cross between a Donskoy (Don sphynx) male and an Oriental Shorthair female. The first two litters produced four Peterbald kittens: Mandarin iz Murino, Muscat iz Murino, Nezhenka iz Murino, and Nocturne iz Murino. These four Peterbalds were the founders of the breed. In 1996, the breed was recognized by the Russian Cat Federation. In 1997, it was adopted by The International Cat Association (TICA), and in 2003 by the World Cat Federation (WCF).

Temperament

Peterbald cats are known for being kind, affectionate, and peaceful animals. They are also described as curious, smart, and energetic. These cats thrive on attention and are known to follow their owners from room to room. They communicate vocally, especially when seeking attention, and enjoy sleeping on their owners' knees. Peterbald cats also typically get along well with other cats, as well as other animals and children.

Common health issues
The Peterbald breed is known for its susceptibility to obesity, making it crucial to provide them with a high-quality, high-protein diet. Due to their hairless nature, Peterbald cats have a rapid metabolism and often exhibit a strong appetite. Ensuring a constant supply of fresh, clean water is equally essential for their well-being.
Although hairless, Peterbald cats require regular grooming. Their skin secretes a so-called skin oil, a waxy reddish-brown sticky substance, which accumulates around the claws and in the ear flaps. This is nothing more than an additional defense of the body against environmental influences. If your Peterbald, especially if light-colored, looks a little greasy, you should not wash it with water and cat shampoos but rather wipe its body with a cloth soaked in a special oil for children. As a rule, in adult cats with residual hair, such excessive skin secretions are absent, and the owner can periodically clean just the ear flaps. Trimming your cat's nails and cleaning its teeth is another important routine that needs to be done regularly.

The Peterbald is considered a healthy breed, with their main issue being their lack of fur. The skin of naked cats behaves similarly to human skin; it sweats when it is hot and tans in the summer under the sun's rays. The skin is very sensitive to sun exposure, drying out, and mechanical damage, and requires protection, which can be provided by applying baby oil.
