American Burmese

The American Burmese is a breed variant of the Burmese breed. Most modern Burmese cats are descendants of a single female cat named Wong Mau, who was brought from Burma to the United States in 1930 and was later bred with American Siamese cats. This breeding led to the development of distinct Burmese breed standards in America and Britain, which is uncommon in pedigreed domestic cats. While most modern cat registries do not formally recognize these as separate breeds, those that do refer to the British type as the European Burmese. More recently, The International Cat Association (TICA) and CFA clubs have begun using the American breed standard at select shows in Europe.

Appearance

The American Burmese, also known as the contemporary Burmese, differs from the British type in several physical characteristics. It is a stockier cat with a broader head, round eyes, and a shorter, flatter muzzle. The ears of the American Burmese are wider at the base. The legs and tail are proportionate to the body, and the paws are rounded. Both types have a very short, fine, and glossy coat with a satin-like finish. The coat color is solid and uniform over the body, gradually shading to lighter underparts. The eye color can be green or yellow, depending on the coat color.
