Tonkinese cat

Other names: Tonk
The Tonkinese is a domestic cat breed with a distinctive pointed coat pattern that comes in a variety of colors. The best-known variety is the short-haired Tonkinese, but there is also a semi-longhaired variety, sometimes referred to as Tibetan, which is more popular in Europe, particularly in countries such as the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, and France. While Tonkinese cats are popular in the United States and Canada, they still remain rare in Europe.

Appearance

The Tonkinese is a medium-sized, muscular, and athletic cat with thin legs that are proportionate to its body. They have oval-shaped, medium-sized feet and a medium-sized tail with a slightly rounded tip. The head of the Tonkinese forms a triangle from the front with softened contours. Their ears are wide at the base and have rounded tips. The eyes of the Tonkinese are walnut-shaped and slightly slanted, with colors ranging from pale blue to greenish turquoise (bluish-green). Their fur is very soft, and there are both short-haired and semi-long-haired varieties in some countries, known as the 'Tibetan' type. The typical Tonkinese pattern is 'mink', resulting from a cross between the colorpoint of the Siamese and the sepia of the Burmese. This breed can have three different patterns: colorpoint, sepia, and mink, in various colors and with or without tabby, silver, or smoke markings.

Origin

The Tonkinese breed has a long history, dating back centuries, originating from a cross between two closely related breeds, the Siamese and the Burmese. In its country of origin, Thailand, the breed existed for a long time without a specific name. It is believed that the cat known as Wong Mau, with a mink pattern, was the predecessor of the modern Burmese and Tonkinese breeds. Wong Mau was a female cat that arrived in the United States in 1930. Initially, American breeders focused on developing the Burmese breed and were only interested in sepia kittens. However, a cat referred to as the "chocolate Siamese," which displayed qualities of both parent breeds, caught the interest of Canadian breeders. The breed was officially recognized in Canada in 1965 under the name Tonkinese. The Tonkinese breed was officially recognized by the Canadian Cat Association (CCA) in 1974 and later by the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) in 1978.

Common health issues
Tonkinese cats can be fed a diet that consists of either dry or wet high-quality cat food that is rich in proteins and fats. It is important to ensure that the cat food provides all the necessary nutrients for the cat's health. Additionally, it is crucial to provide the cat with free access to fresh and clean water at all times to ensure they stay hydrated and receive enough nourishment.
The Tonkinese cat's soft and short coat is low-maintenance, requiring only weekly brushing to eliminate dead hair and evenly distribute skin oil. While baths are seldom required, it's essential to brush your cat's teeth regularly to ward off periodontal disease and inspect its ears weekly. Additionally, make sure to gently wipe the corners of its eyes with a soft, damp cloth to eliminate any discharge.

The Tonkinese breed is known for being generally healthy, but like any other breed, they can be susceptible to genetic health conditions. Some of the common health issues that Tonkinese cats may face include heart disease like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), gingivitis, asthma, progressive retinal atrophy leading to vision loss, and amyloidosis, a condition characterized by the accumulation of abnormal proteins known as amyloid fibrils in the body tissues.
