The Nebelung is a relatively new and still rare breed that emerged in the United States in the 1980s. Cora Cobb, the owner of two cats named Siegfried and Brunhilde, was captivated by the beauty of her blue-gray felines. Siegfried and Brunhilde bore a resemblance to Russian Blue cats, albeit with a semi-long coat. Curious to explore the possibility of establishing a new breed with these cats, Cora reached out to a geneticist associated with the American Cat Association. This geneticist, Solveig Pfleuger, suggested that the breed be classified as a semi-long-haired Russian Blue. With Pfleuger's backing, Cobb drafted a breeding standard based on the Russian Blue standard, with the key distinction being the coat length. TICA was the first organization to officially recognize the Nebelung breed and establish a breed standard. In addition to TICA, the Nebelung is acknowledged by the American Cat Fanciers Association (ACFA), the World Cat Federation (WCF), Livre Officiel des Origines Félines (LOOF), the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF), as well as various independent cat associations in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany.
