Ojos Azules

Other names: Ojos
The Ojos Azules is a breed of domestic cat that was developed in the United States. Its name originates from its distinctive blue eyes; 'Ojos Azules' in Spanish directly translates to 'blue eyes'. Despite being a relatively new breed, the Ojos Azules faced challenges due to the lethal side effects associated with the blue eye mutation. Consequently, breeders ceased their efforts with this unique gene, leading to the extinction of the Ojos Azules breed.

Appearance

The Ojos Azules is a graceful cat with a proportional body that is neither too long nor too massive. It has small, rounded paws, with hind legs slightly longer than the front legs. The tail is medium-length with a pointed tip. The ears are medium-sized, high set, and rounded at the ends. The eyes are large and can be blue or blue-gray in color, with some cats having odd eyes where one eye is green, orange, or yellow. The coat of the breed can be short or long, and is soft and silky. All colors are allowed, but only particolors (bicolors and tricolors), colorpoints, and intermediate colors with a white tail tip are permitted.

Origin

In 1984, a small tortoiseshell cat named Cornflower was discovered among feral cat populations in New Mexico. She was bred with American Shorthairs to see if she could pass on a rare gene that resulted in blue eyes. Surprisingly, the kittens inherited the blue eyes, leading to the creation of the Ojos Azules breed. Initially, the Ojos Azules breed was very rare, with only ten known cats in 1992. The breed was officially accepted for registration by TICA in 1991, in both short and long-haired varieties. However, due to the genetic particularity of the breed causing cranial malformations in some cats, breeding was temporarily suspended. Eventually, breeders chose to stop working with cats bearing this blue eye mutation, leading to the official extinction of the Ojos Azules breed.
