It is monotypic within the genus Satrapa.It is found in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela, where its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, pastureland, and heavily degraded former forest.
