Origin

The breed originates in the Czech Republic. The first kittens were born in the city of Liberec in 1981 due to the accidental appearance of curly kittens in the litter of Persian cats. Breeders then tried to maintain the curly coat using genetics, which unfortunately led to a decrease in the fertility of the cats. In an attempt to formally recognize the breed, breeders tried to register it with the Fédération Internationale Féline (FIFE) in 1994. However, FIFE declined to recognize the breed due to the low number of specimens, leading to a decrease in interest in the breed. Despite this setback, there are several breeding stations in the Czech Republic that focus on breeding Bohemian Rex cats, and there are reportedly around 100 specimens with a stable population.

Temperament

Bohemian Rex is an intelligent but lazy breed of cat. They have a calm and friendly nature, enjoying peace and quiet. However, they can become nervous and shy if they are not given their space and a place to hide. Bohemian Rex cats are gentle and can be good companions for children, provided that children are taught not to tease the cat. They enjoy playing with children and are generally gentle with them. They are also friendly towards other animals and can get along well with other cats and dogs in the household, especially if those animals have a peaceful and calm temperament.
