Cornish Rex

The Cornish Rex is a breed of cat characterized by its very short and soft coat. In fact, Cornish Rexes have no guard hairs but only a curly undercoat. The curl in their fur is caused by a different mutation and gene than that of the Devon Rex. The breed is native to the United Kingdom and originated in Cornwall.

Appearance

The Cornish Rex is an elegant medium-sized cat. Its body is strong, slender, and set high on its feet. The hips are muscular, strong, and look more voluminous compared to the rest of the body. The limbs are long, thin, and straight. The paws are graceful, small, and slightly oval. The tail is long, thin, very flexible, tapering to the end, and completely covered with curled hair. The head is relatively small and pointed. The cheeks are flat and muscular. The whiskers and eyebrows are long and wavy. The ears are alert, mobile, upright, and high, large, wide at the base, with rounded tips. The eyes are almond-shaped and medium in size. The color of the eyes should match the color of the coat; they can be greenish-yellow, green, or yellow. The coat of the Cornish Rex is short, fine, relatively dense, very soft, and silky. It is only composed of guard hair and undercoat. The guard hair looks like down. The hair on the chin, chest, and belly is shorter. Cornish Rexes can come in a wide variety of coat colors and patterns.

Origin

The first Cornish Rex cat appeared in Cornwall, UK in the early 1950s, found among a litter of farm cats. One of the kittens, a cream-colored male named Kallibunker, had an extremely unusual, fine and curly coat; it was the first Cornish Rex. The owner decided to backcross Kallibunker to his mother to produce two other curly-coated kittens. Through breeding efforts, a new breed was developed with a beautiful wavy, curly coat that lies in a steep wave. The breed's name is a reference to its region of origin and its coat's resemblance to that of the rex rabbit. The Cornish Rex was officially recognized in England in 1967 and gained the privilege to participate in exhibitions. Subsequently, they were acknowledged by various felinological organizations such as GCCF, FIFE, WCF, and others. Today, the Cornish Rex is well-known in many countries around the world.

The Cornish Rex breed necessitates a diet rich in nutrients tailored for active felines or growing kittens. A high-quality cat food that includes essential proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals is crucial to uphold their well-being and preserve their lustrous coat. Ensuring your cat has constant access to fresh, clean water is equally essential for their overall health.
The coat of the Cornish Rex breed demands special care and attention to uphold its soft texture. It is vital to engage in regular grooming practices to achieve this. Brushing your Cornish Rex once or twice a week using a soft bristle brush is essential to eliminate loose hair and evenly distribute natural oils. Additionally, remember to attend to their oral hygiene by cleaning their teeth regularly, trimming their nails, and clearing their ears and eyes that often accumulate secretions. By incorporating these grooming routines into your care regimen, you can ensure the health and well-being of your Cornish Rex.

Cornish Rex cats are predisposed to various health conditions, including polycystic kidney disease, which is a common genetic issue in cats. In addition, they are at risk for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, vitamin K-dependent coagulopathy, patellar luxation, periodontal disease, and pyruvate kinase deficiency. Moreover, these felines can experience congenital hypotrichosis, leading to hair thinning or baldness in localized areas. Their short coat also makes them susceptible to specific skin sensitivities.
