Appearance

The York Chocolate is a breed of cat that is known for its large size and well-developed muscles. It has long and thin but powerful legs, small and round feet, and a long and well-furnished tail. The head of the York Chocolate is shaped like a truncated triangle, elongated more than it is wide. Its eyes are oval, large, and can be yellow or green in color. The ears are large and set wide apart on the head. The fur of the York Chocolate is soft, silky, and dense with very little undercoat. This breed can come in chocolate and lilac colors, either uniform or two-tone, with intense coloring.

Origin

The breed originated accidentally in 1983 in New York State. Janet Chifari received a very beautiful dark brown kitten from a black father and a black and white mother. She named the kitten Brownie. Later, Brownie had a litter with a black longhaired male. There were two kittens in the litter: a chocolate male and a white and chocolate female. Upon noticing similarities in coat and body types, Chiefari began her own breeding program. One thing led to another and the steps for recognition of the breed began. She chose a name very representative of these cats: York for the origin, and chocolate for the color. The breed is recognized, under the shorter name York, by the recently founded World Cat Federation based in Germany. However, it is not recognized by major, long-established international cat fancier organizations such as The International Cat Association (TICA), the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA), or Fédération Internationale Féline (FIFe), nor by US national groups such as the American Cat Fanciers Association (ACFA).

Common health issues
York Chocolate cats do not have any special dietary requirements. They should be fed high-quality cat food that is rich in protein and have constant access to fresh, clean water.
The fur of this breed is prone to matting, requiring regular brushing several times a week. This routine aids in eliminating knots, matting, and dead hair, maintaining a smooth and shiny coat for your cat. Additionally, it is essential to clean their ears, brush their teeth regularly, and trim their nails when necessary. Providing a scratching post allows your cat to sharpen its claws and prevents damage to furniture.
