Appearance

Selkirk Rex cats are medium-sized animals known for their strong build. They have legs of medium length and paws that vary depending on the length of their hair. The short-haired Selkirk Rex has small, delicate, oval-shaped paws, while the long-haired variety has larger paws. Their tails are densely covered with hair, and their eyes are round, wide-set, bright, and expressive. These cats have very soft coats with a wooly texture and loose, unstructured curls. The short-haired Selkirk Rex has a curly, short, and thick coat, while the long-haired variation has a unique coat that combines straight and slightly curled hair. Selkirk Rex cats can come in a wide range of colors, including pointed, sepia, and mink varieties of albinism, bicolors, cinnamon, silver/smoke, and the chocolate and lilac series.

Origin

The Selkirk Rex originated in Montana, USA in 1987, with a litter born to a rescued cat. The only unusually coated kitten in the litter was ultimately placed with breeder Jeri Newman, who named her Miss DiPesto. This foundation cat was bred to a black Persian tomcat, producing three Selkirk Rex and three straight-haired kittens. All Selkirk Rex cats trace their ancestry back to Miss DiPesto. Jeri Newman named the breed after her stepfather, 'Selkirk,' making this the first (and currently only) breed of cat to be named after an actual person. The Selkirk Rex was accepted by The International Cat Association in 1992, the American Cat Fanciers Association in 1998, and the Cat Fanciers' Association in 2000.

Temperament

Selkirk Rex cats are known for their calm and affectionate demeanor. They have a gentle and peaceful nature, forming strong bonds with their owners quickly. These loving felines are patient and enjoy playful interactions, without being overly demanding. They are attentive and harmonious around children and other pets. Selkirk Rex cats are fond of cuddling on their owner's lap and can become distressed if left alone for extended periods or consistently ignored. Furthermore, their intelligence shines through as they exhibit a keen interest in learning new tricks, even going as far as opening drawers in search of their beloved toy.

Selkirk Rex cats do not have any special dietary requirements. Owners should feed them a properly balanced, high-protein diet and avoid overfeeding. It is important to provide your cat with constant access to fresh and clean water to help it stay well-hydrated.
Despite its luxurious coat, the Selkirk Rex is surprisingly low-maintenance. To keep this unique coat in top condition, it's important not to over-brush, as this can loosen the curls. Instead, opt for a wide-toothed comb and groom a few times a week. Regular baths with a mild shampoo can prevent matting. Don't forget to clean the cat's ears, brush its teeth regularly, and trim its nails as needed. By following these simple grooming tips, you can keep your Selkirk Rex looking and feeling its best.

Selkirk Rex is generally a healthy breed and does not have any specific problems with health. However, they may inherit some health conditions from the outcross breeds used, including polycystic kidney disease, which causes the development of cysts in the kidney, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which may result in heart failure, an irregular heartbeat, and sudden cardiac death.
