Lykoi

Other names: Werewolf cat, wolf cat
The lykoi, also known as lýkoi, is commonly referred to as the wolf cat or werewolf cat due to its resemblance to the popular concept of a werewolf. This unique breed is the result of a natural mutation in short-haired domestic cats, with the mutation first being observed around twenty years ago. The initial spontaneous lykoi mutations were discovered in Virginia and later in Tennessee, with a natural mutation also found in Italy in 2014 in Brescia. This discovery helped broaden the gene pool of the breed in Europe, starting in France in 2013. Subsequently, in July 2016, another natural mutation occurred in the city of Strasbourg, France, and these cats are being integrated into a breed creation program led by Christine Boulanger, who has been importing the breed to Europe since 2013. To ensure the genetic purity of the Lykoi cats, DNA tests have been conducted by the University of California at Davis in the United States to confirm that they do not carry the Sphynx/DevonRex gene. The term "lykoï" is derived from the Greek word for wolf, reflecting the distinctive appearance and characteristics of this intriguing feline breed.

Appearance

The Lykoi is a partially or almost completely naked cat that is genetically distinct from the Canadian Sphynx. Its coat is unique in appearance in that it resembles possum fur. Typically, they have a solid black coat color mixed with gray, a wedge-shaped head, and a flexible, lean body without excess weight. They lack hair around the eyes, nose, ears, and mouth. Their eyes are typically amber or green in color. A unique trait of the breed is that the Lykoi sheds a lot when older but regrows its hair later in life depending on the season.

Origin

The Lykoi breed was founded in 2011 by Johnny Gobble, Brittney Gobble, and Patti Thomas when two unrelated litters of kittens were presented to the founders as unique cats. The Gobbles conducted careful health evaluations to ensure that the cat's unusual appearance was not caused by sickness or disease. To prove that it was a genetic trait, Johnny Gobble bred two of the unrelated cats to produce the first intentionally bred Lykoi. Since the mother of one litter was a black domestic cat, extensive outcrossing with short-haired black domestic cats began. The Lykoi is now recognized as a Championship Breed and has been able to compete against other Championship breeds since May 2017, with TICA. In The Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA), Lykoi of all colors are accepted and are set to compete in the Championship Breed category starting in 2023-2024.

Temperament

Lykoi cats are known for their amiable and laid-back demeanor, often earning them the affectionate moniker of 'dog-like cats'. They exhibit a high degree of fondness towards their owners and are characterized by their playful and inquisitive nature. Despite their sociable tendencies, they also appreciate having some alone time. When properly socialized from a young age, Lykoi cats integrate seamlessly into various types of families. However, some individuals may exhibit reserved behavior, particularly in the presence of unfamiliar individuals. Adjusting to new people and changes within the household may take some time for Lykoi cats, as they tend to be cautious and may need a period to acclimate. While they can coexist harmoniously with other pets, especially when introduced during their kittenhood, the process should be gradual to ensure a smooth transition. Sudden introductions to new pets, especially those with assertive personalities, can be challenging for Lykoi cats due to their wariness of abrupt changes.

The statement is mostly accurate, but there are a few points that could be clarified or expanded upon for completeness: 1. **Properly balanced high-protein diet**: While Lykoi cats do not require a special diet, it is crucial to ensure that their diet is high in protein. Protein is essential for their muscle development and overall health. It is also worth mentioning that it is essential to ensure that the protein source is of high quality. 2. **Dry and wet food**: Lykoi cats can consume both dry and wet food. Both types of food have their benefits, and it is recommended to provide a variety of textures in their diet. This can help keep their diet interesting and provide different nutritional benefits. 3. **Fresh water**: It is essential for Lykoi cats, as well as all cats, to have access to fresh water at all times. Staying hydrated is crucial for their overall health and helps prevent urinary tract issues. By incorporating these additional details, the statement will provide a more comprehensive understanding of the dietary needs of Lykoi cats.
Although Lykoi cats are semi-hairless, they still shed just as much as other cats, and sometimes even more. They are very prone to seasonal hair loss and can sometimes even develop bald patches. It is recommended to brush your Lykoi cat weekly. Since this breed has sensitive skin, it is important to choose grooming tools carefully to avoid causing irritation. Lykoi cats also require bathing at least once a month to keep their skin clean and free of oil buildup. Regularly trimming your cat's nails and cleaning its ears are also essential. Additionally, brushing your cat's teeth is important to help reduce the risk of dental disease.

Because the Lykoi is a relatively new breed, there is still much to learn about their genetics and potential health issues. An interesting characteristic of this cat breed is that Lykois may shed tears as they age. As with all cats, it is essential to bring your pet to the veterinarian regularly for check-ups to identify any health problems early and maintain their overall well-being.
