Appearance

The Kinkalow breed stands out for its robust and muscular physique, complemented by a lengthy and elegant tail. Notably, their hind legs are typically longer than their front legs, adding to their unique appearance. Their coat, which can be either short or long, is luxuriously soft and comes in an array of colors and patterns, further enhancing their charm. However, it is the distinctively curled ears of the Kinkalow that truly set them apart. Initially born with straight ears, these feline companions start to exhibit their signature curled shape within the first week of life. Over time, the ears gradually curve backward, reaching their characteristic angle of between 90 and 180 degrees from the head by around five months of age. This gradual transformation adds to the allure and individuality of the Kinkalow breed, making them a fascinating and captivating feline companion.

Origin

The Kinkalow cat breed, with its origins in the United States of America, was created when cat breeder Terri Harris made the decision to cross a Munchkin with an American Curl. This unique blend resulted in a cat with short legs, reminiscent of the Munchkin, and distinctive curled ears like the American Curl. Over the course of the 1990s, Terri Harris and other enthusiasts of dwarf breeds actively worked on developing the Kinkalow breed. In 1997, their efforts paid off when The International Cat Association granted the Kinkalow breed recognition as an experimental breed. Initially named Munchkinlanes Kinkalow Louie, the name 'Kinkalow' likely points to the distinctive kinks in this breed's ears and its short stature. Today, the Kinkalow breed has earned recognition from the Rare and Exotic Feline Registry, solidifying its place in the world of unique and cherished cat breeds.

Common health issues
Kinkalow cats do not have any specific dietary requirements. However, it is crucial to prevent them from becoming overweight as their short legs are prone to spinal issues due to excess weight. Thus, it is advisable to provide them with a diet rich in protein, essential vitamins, and minerals while limiting the intake of snacks. Additionally, ensuring that your cat has constant access to fresh and clean water is vital to ensure they receive proper nourishment.
Kinkalow cats are known for their efficient self-grooming habits, requiring minimal maintenance. Regular brushing, at least once a week, helps prevent their fur from tangling and minimizes shedding. While they generally do not require frequent baths unless they become dirty, it is advisable to use hypoallergenic cat shampoo to lower the potential for any skin irritation. Additionally, dental care is essential, with brushing their teeth a few times a week, alongside regular ear inspections and nail trimming as needed.

The Kinkalow is typically a healthy cat breed; however, due to their short legs in proportion to their body length, they, like most dwarf cat breeds, are at a higher risk of spinal injuries. It is crucial to monitor your cat's back health for any signs of pain or discomfort. Furthermore, Kinkalows are more susceptible to ear infections due to the unique curl in their ears, making them more exposed to wax build-up. Regularly cleaning their ears and discussing any concerns with your vet can help prevent serious issues and maintain your Kinkalow cat's well-being.
