Neva Masquerade

The Neva Masquerade is a long-haired breed of domestic cat, which is a colorpoint variant of the Siberian cat. It is primarily bred in Russian catteries. The Neva Masquerade earned its name because it was originally from St. Petersburg and due to the distinctive color of its mask-like face and glove-like paws.

Appearance

The Neva Masquerade is a strong and powerfully built cat, with strong hindquarters and large, well-rounded paws. Its bushy tail is medium in length and slightly shorter than the torso. These cats have a slight arch in their back because their hind legs are slightly longer than the front legs. This shape, along with the power in their hind legs, contributes to their incredible agility and enables them to jump exceptionally high. Their medium-sized ears are broad at the base and rounded at the tip. The eyes are large and round, giving an overall sweet expression to their face; the eye color is blue, rich, and evenly colored. Neva Masquerades have three natural types of feline fur: guard hair, awn hair, and down hair. These three layers form a semi-long to long very dense triple-coat, with guard hairs that are water-repellent. The breed has an overall light coat color with darker solid or tabby point markings on its head, legs, and tail. The tabby point marking is sometimes referred to as lynx point (mostly in North America). The breed comes in six color variants, with the most common being Seal-point and Seal tabby point. Other color types in the Neva Masquerade include red-point, blue-point, and turtle-point (usually found only in female cats).

Origin

The history of the Neva Masquerade breed dates back to the 20th century and is rooted in Siberian cats that have lived in Siberia for many centuries. As an aboriginal breed, it evolved independently in response to its natural environment. The exact place of origin of the Neva Masquerade is uncertain. Breeding of these cats began in St. Petersburg at the cat club 'Kotofei' under the guidance of breeder Olga Mironova in 1989. The breed was officially recognized by international organizations in 1992, though not all felinological organizations acknowledge it as a distinct breed.

Temperament

Neva Masquerade cats are known for their independence and do not require constant attention. They have a well-balanced temperament and display aristocratic manners. These cats are graceful, tidy, and affectionate. While they are friendly and sociable, they are also respectful of boundaries. They have a moderate level of playfulness and activity. Neva Masquerade cats do not do well with loneliness and thrive on freedom, which can sometimes lead to stubborn behavior. They form strong bonds with their owners, displaying loyalty, patience, generosity, and high intelligence. Nevskaya Masquerades make excellent companions and are suitable for families with children. They are protective of infants, showing care and attention, and enjoy playing with older children. This breed is non-aggressive, preferring to avoid conflict rather than resorting to biting or scratching. They are cautious around strangers but are generally friendly towards other pets.

Neva Masquerade cats are a specific color variation of the Siberian cat breed, and they do not have any unique dietary requirements compared to other domestic cats. It is important to provide them with a balanced diet that is high in protein, such as quality commercial cat food. Additionally, ensuring they have access to fresh, clean water at all times is crucial for their health and well-being. Regular veterinary check-ups can also help ensure that your Neva Masquerade cat is maintaining a healthy weight and overall condition.
During the winter, the dense triple coat of the Neva Masquerade is textured but glossy and requires frequent grooming to prevent matting. The summer coat becomes distinctly shorter than the winter coat. Neva Masquerade cats molt twice a year, shedding their heavy winter coat in spring. Many Neva Masquerades also experience a less intense 'mini-molt' at the end of the summer season to prepare for their thick winter coat. However, they will still lose fur year-round and need daily grooming to prevent matting of their dense triple coat. It is also important to trim your cat's nails and clean its ears as needed. Teeth brushing is also crucial; it should be done as frequently as possible to help reduce the risk of dental disease.

Like many indigenous breeds, Neva Masquerade cats have a robust immune system and are not easily susceptible to diseases. They are also rarely prone to hereditary health conditions. However, one disease they can be susceptible to is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. This condition involves the thickening of the heart's muscle walls, which can result in various complications such as heart failure, arterial thromboembolism, and sudden death.
