Appearance

The Toyger is a muscular and athletic-looking cat with a very long tail that is rounded at the tip. It has an oval head and small, round ears. The eyes are medium set wide apart, and have a rich, deep color. The coat is short, thick, lush, and soft to the touch. It has a mackerel tabby pattern with very dark tabby markings on a warm red undercoat. The hairs forming the patterns are uniformly dark. The belly and inside of the legs are marked, while the paw pads and the tail tip are black. Facial stripes and markings are circularly aligned around the face, and there is an 'M' marking on the Toyger's forehead. There can also be virtually white 'thumb marks' on the back of the ears. The eyes have black, mascara-like markings and white spectacles.

Origin

The story of the Toyger began in the United States in the early 1980s thanks to Judy Sudgen, whose mother, Jean Mill, was the founder of the Bengal breed. She noticed that her cat, Millwood Sharp Shooter, had two tabby spot marks on his temple. These tiny spots occurring on the temples of the face proved genetically that the circular tiger face pattern could be possible in a domestic cat. Judy Sugden wanted to develop a breed of cat that looked like miniature tigers. To do this, she crossed her Bengal cat named Millwood Rumpled Spotskin with a cat of unusual tiger color brought from India. As a result of many years of hard selection, Toygers with stable tiger color were born. The breed was accepted into the TICA championship in 2007, and in 2016, the Toyger was recognized as a breed by the Official Book of Feline Origins (LOOF).

Temperament

Toyger cats are known for their sociable and playful nature, making them delightful companions for humans and other animals alike. Their love for human company is evident in their preference for spending time with their owners, engaging in various games and activities. These feline friends form strong attachments with their owners and thrive on attention to maintain their emotional well-being. In addition to their sociability, Toyger cats exhibit affectionate behavior, displaying a genuine curiosity about their surroundings. Their high level of intelligence makes them quick learners and adaptable to new situations. To foster a harmonious relationship with Toyger cats, it is important to provide them with a quiet environment that is free from excessive activity and noise. Teaching children to respect the Toyger's need for peace and tranquility can help create a positive living environment for both the cat and the family. Despite their preference for a serene environment, Toyger cats are amiable towards other feline companions and can coexist peacefully with dogs who are considerate of their boundaries. Their amicable nature and ability to adapt to different social settings make them versatile pets that can thrive in diverse households.

Common health issues
Toyger cats require a properly balanced high-protein diet, and they can eat both dry and wet food. They should also have access to fresh water at all times to ensure they receive adequate nourishment.
Grooming the Toyger is a relatively low-maintenance task. A weekly brushing routine is sufficient to maintain a shiny and healthy coat. It's also essential to regularly trim their nails and clean their ears. Furthermore, keeping their teeth clean by brushing them frequently with a vet-approved pet toothpaste is crucial to prevent any gum issues. It's beneficial to introduce these grooming practices early on to help your kitten become accustomed to them.

Because Toyger cats are a relatively new breed, the specific health concerns they may face are still being studied. However, some issues that have been observed within the breed include heart murmurs, which could be a sign of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and progressive retinal atrophy, leading to gradual vision loss.
