Origin

The British Longhair was developed in Britain at the close of the 19th century. To establish this new breed, breeders crossed British Shorthair and Persian cats. Officially, the British Longhair is recognized as a long-haired variant of the British Shorthair.

Temperament

The British Longhair cat is a breed known for its intelligence and calm demeanor, making it a perfect companion for individuals who lead busy lifestyles. Their laid-back nature makes them content to lounge on the couch for hours on end. Despite their lazy tendencies, they are also quite playful, particularly during their younger years. This breed is characterized by its inquisitive and amiable nature, often forming strong bonds with their owners. Additionally, they are known to be affectionate and patient with children, although they may not appreciate being carried or picked up.

Common health issues
British Longhair cats do not have any specific dietary needs; however, they do require a high-protein diet and can consume both dry and wet food. Due to their susceptibility to obesity, it is crucial to carefully observe and regulate their food consumption.
Similar to many cats with longer hair, British Longhair cats need regular brushing to prevent matting. The risk of tangles is especially high during autumn and winter when their coat thickens in anticipation of the colder weather. In addition to brushing, it is important to keep their ears clean, trim their nails, and brush their teeth. Furthermore, regular veterinary dental check-ups can help identify and address any dental problems before they worsen.

The British Longhair, like other breeds derived from and including the Persian, have an increased risk of inherited polycystic kidney disease (PKD), especially autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). In this disease, multiple fluid-filled sacs develop within the kidney tissue, severely hampering the kidneys' ability to function. To protect kittens from this disease, breeders often conduct DNA tests to identify the disease in the parents. The British Longhair is also one of the breeds most particularly affected by neonatal erythrolysis. This disease occurs when a kitten has blood group A, the father is group A, but the mother is group B. The mother then transmits antibodies to her kittens via her colostrum, resulting in the death of the newborn kitten.
