The California Spangled cat resembles a miniature leopard at first glance. It has a long, lean, somewhat muscular body and a distinctive low-slung walk. The head is medium-sized and rounded, with medium to large almond-shaped eyes in various colors that should match the coat. The ears are of medium size but slightly short, with rounded tips and wide bases. The fur is short, except for the belly and tail where the hair is slightly longer. The only approved pattern is the spotted tabby, with round or slightly block-shaped spots being the most desirable. Triangular, oval, or square spots are also acceptable. The coat of the California Spangled cat may come in colors such as bronze, gold, blue, chocolate, red, black, silver, or white.
