Appearance

Raas cats, also known as Busok and Amethyst cats, share physical characteristics with leopards and jungle cats, giving them a graceful appearance. They are medium-sized, larger than other cat breeds, with a triangular, slightly square face and a slightly sharp chin. Their long, pointed ears and long tails with a bent tip add to their distinctive look. Their eyes are dark green or blue, oval in shape. The fur of Raas cats is short, fine, and soft. It can come in solid patterns, two colors, and color dots, with blue (grey) and cinnamon (dark brown) being common colors. Blue fur may be found in solid and two-color patterns, with white on the chest and stomach. The boundaries between the colors are often unclear. Cats with a blue color are referred to as Busok cats, while those with a cinnamon color are known as Amethyst cats. Amethyst cats are the rarest type and are classified as having a recessive color. There are also new black and lilac variations of the breed emerging.

Origin

The origin of the Raas cat is unknown, but it is believed to have evolved naturally on the island. The breed is likely Asian due to the distinctive shape of its tail, which is bent at the end. The development of the Raas cat breed is unique to Raas Island, where it is protected by local residents who prevent the cats from leaving the island. Typically, only neutered Raas cats are allowed to be taken off the island to ensure the breed's purity is maintained. The birth of blue kittens is eagerly anticipated by the local residents, who later gift these kittens to specific individuals, such as cat lovers. This has attracted the attention of cat lover clubs in Indonesia, who are interested in preserving the Raas cat breed and gaining international recognition for it. However, breeding the Raas cat is challenging due to local beliefs that these cats were historically kept only by nobles and religious leaders (ulemas). Despite these challenges, some Raas cats have been taken outside of Madura and can now be found in cities like Bandung, Bogor, and Semarang. Efforts are being made to ensure the preservation and recognition of the Raas cat in the wider cat community.

Temperament

Wild Raas cats are initially afraid of humans and are challenging to adapt to. However, after breeding and refining up to the 4th generation (F4), they become more family-friendly. These cats truly value those who care for them. They are typically quiet, shy, and guarded, but with time and acclimation to their new surroundings, they become quite friendly. Some even transform into pampered house cats.

Ragdoll cats do not require a special diet, but due to their large size, they need more food than the average cat. A properly balanced high-protein diet will be necessary to support their high energy levels. Providing free access to fresh, clean water is also very important as it helps cats stay well-hydrated.
Ragdoll cats do not require much grooming, but regular brushing will help reduce shedding and keep their coat in good condition. It is also important to regularly brush their teeth, trim their nails, and clean their ears.

The Raas cat is a new breed and there is limited information available about their health issues. It is generally believed that the breed is healthy, but it is recommended to take your Raas cat to the vet regularly to monitor its health and prevent any potential health problems.
