ANIMALS STARTING WITH LETTER c

3472 species

This list holds the record for the largest number of animals whose names begin with the letter C. There are more than 3400 species collected here, among which it is very easy to get lost. Follow our tips below on how to find the right animal quickly.

You probably expect to find a Camel in this list, but it is not here because we use species names rather than a group or common names. The term “camel” refers to an even-toed ungulate in the genus Camelus that includes three extant species: the Bactrian camel, the Dromedary camel, and the Wild Bactrian camel. The full English names of these three species don’t start with the letter “C” and that’s why can’t be found in this list.

Another interesting example is a Cat. The term “cat” refers to the family Felidae and all members of this family are colloquially referred to as cats. There are 41 Felidae species and only a few of them have English names that start with the letter “C”; some species don’t even have the term “cat” in their name. For example, this list includes such cats as the Chinese mountain cat, the Cougar, the Cheetah, and the Caracal, but it misses the Ocelot, the Margay, and the Kodkod who are also cats.

This can be a little tough at times so we made a list of popular animal names starting with the letter “C”. Here it is: Camel, Capybara, Cassowary, Chamois, Chicken, Chimpanzee, Cobra, Crow, Cockatoo, Cougar, Cuckoo, Caracal, Caribou, Cat, Cheetah, Chinchilla, Chipmunk, Cormorant, Caiman, Crocodile, Cardinal, Chameleon, Chickadee, Coati, Conure, Copperhead, Corella, Coyote, Crane.
