We collected more than 470 animals beginning with the letter I.
You probably expect to find an Ibis in this list, but it is not here because we use species names rather than a group or common names. The term “ibis” refers to a group of long-legged wading birds in the family Threskiornithidae. There are 29 extant species of ibis and none of them is included in this list. This is because the English names of all ibis species don’t start with the letter “I”.
For the same reason, an Iguana is not included in this list. The term “iguana” refers to many lizards from the family Iguanidae composed of iguanas and chuckwallas. There are many iguana species in this family and some of them don’t have the term “inguana” as a part of their common name, instead being called “chickwallas”. Within this big family, none of the species' English names starts with the letter “I” and thus can’t be found in this list.
Since it can be confusing sometimes we made a list of popular animal names starting with the letter “I”. Here it is: Impala, Indian Cobra, Iguana, Indigo Snake, Ibis, Icefish, Ibex, Indri, Ivory-Billed Woodpecker.
