ANIMALS STARTING WITH LETTER a

2141 species

We collected more than 2100 animals beginning with the letter A.

You probably expect to find an Anaconda in this list, but it is not here because we use species names rather than a group or common names. For example, the term “Anaconda” refers to a group of large aquatic snakes that belong to the genus Eunectes. They all are found in South America. There are four extant species in this family whose names are following: the Green anaconda, the Yellow anaconda, the Darkly-spotted anaconda, and the Bolivian anaconda. None of these animals start with letter A.

Another example goes for Antelopes, a number of species of even-toed hoofed mammals. The term “antelope” is used to describe all members of the family Bovidae that do not fall under the category of sheep, cattle, or goats. Usually, all species of the Antilopinae, Hippotraginae, Reduncinae, Cephalophinae, many Bovinae, the Grey rhebok, and the impala are called antelope.

For example, the Arabian oryx and the Nilgai are both antelope but this list contains only the Arabian oryx because its full name starts with the letter “A”.

With Alligators, it is a bit easier though. These large reptiles belong to the genus Alligator of the family Alligatoridae. There are only two extant species in this family: the American alligator and the Chinese alligator. So this list includes only the American alligator whose name starts with the letter “A”.

It might sound confusing so we collected a list of popular animal names starting with the letter “A”. Here it is: Albatross, Alpaca, Alligator, Anaconda, Antelope, Aardvark, Aye-aye, Aardwolf, Addax, Argali, Ant, Anteater, Ape, Armadillo, Avocet, Axolotl, Agouti, Anhinga.
